 The Bold Red Lip

Who's up for some bold, breathtaking color? One of this fall's hottest makeup trends is the vivid red lip. I'm personally jazzed about this particular trend, as there's something so timeless and expressive about red lipstick. 

From the runway to the red carpet to the everyday woman, bold red lips are a fashion statement in and of themselves. What's more, I've discovered red lipstick also has the power to change a mood and provide a big boost of confidence. When I'm feeling so-so, I simply swipe on a dramatic red color and, voila, I'm ready to tackle the world (or at least my endless list of errands and five loads of laundry)…

Bring on the shades of scarlet, crimson, and coral. Here are a few tips to ensure your red lips are runway-ready:

Tip #1 First, get over your fear of red lipstick. No matter what age, skin tone, or hair color you have, anyone can don red lips. It all comes down to picking a shade that works best with your skin tone. For example, warmer skin tones pair well with a wine red; cooler skin tones work best with a blue-based red; olive skin is best with a coral red. Glamour Magazine offers a complete run-down on picking the best red for your skin tone. However, I'm a firm believer while certain reds might be more ideal with certain skin tones, this is a lose rule. I have every shade of red lipstick known to woman and typically choose the shade based on my mood, outfit, eye makeup colors, etc.

Tip #2 Now that you've conquered your fears, decide what shade you want to sport. Do you want a red that really pops? If so, go with a coral, orange-based red. Do you want a warmer red? Then go with a shade that has brown undertones. Do you want a wine-stained pout? Choose a shade that has a purple hue.

Tip #3 Make your bold lips long lasting. First, use a complimentary lip liner shade and trace the inside edges of your lips. Then use the liner to fill in lips (this will help the lipstick adhere). After applying the liner, blot lips. Next, apply lipstick. Blot and then apply another layer of lipstick. Lastly, finish with powder: dust your lips lightly with face powder (use sparingly as it doesn't take much).

There. Whether a happy hour social or a trip to the grocery store, you are ready to sport bold, red lips with utter confidence this season…
