The Art of Makeup
By Simone DeBlasioDuring August Society 805 celebrates art. Naturally, I was inspired to write about makeup for this issue.
I have been fascinated with makeup since I was a little girl. I always admired the precision in which my aunt would paint her face. She was a masterpiece right off the cover of a magazine. In my home makeup wasn’t permitted, so before homeroom I’d sneak into the school bathroom to apply my creamy lavender eye shadow and black eyeliner. It took my mom months to notice, but by that time she had given in.
I’m the type of gal who enjoys the ritual of getting ready to go out more than actually going out. I set the mood by putting on music and carefully laying out the elements – my makeup routine is practically an art form.
I begin with moisturizer (if it’s daytime it must include SPF). The moisturizer hydrates and prepares my skin. My favorite step is concealing my blemishes and dark circles with Elf’sConcealer. You can get this miracle powder for a measly $5.00 atwww.eyeslipsface.com. Elf also carries mineral foundations, but I prefer Bare Essentials Minerals SPF. Their foundation powder has a creamy texture that buffs out the flaws, leaving you with a luminous glow; $25 at www.bareescentuals.com. After the canvas has been set, I highlight my cheekbones with a splash of color, using my favorite blush“Orgasm” by Nars (gotta love the name); $27.50 at www.narscosmetics.com.
If the eyes are the windows to the soul, I think it’s important to have beautiful window treatments. The more dramatic, the better. For evening I prefer a sultry-smoky eye, using dark shimmery, rich eye shadows by MAC, along with their Eye Kohl eyeliner. I outline my top and bottom lids, as well as the inside of the top. The pencil is soft but gives a strong definition with a silky-smooth, matte pearl finish; both products are $14.50 atwww.maccosmetics.com.
Mascara is a tough one for me. My parents gave me horrible eyelashes – short and straight. I’ve found the cure with Rimmel London Glam'Eyes Day 2 Night Mascara. This innovative mascara has a wand with two options – volume and length, and since I need help in both areas I am in love with this versatile product. After I’ve applied some volume, I use the lengthening brush to stretch my lashes to create sexy, glamorous eyes. $8.50 at www.rimmellondon.com.
Lastly, it’s time to boost up the lips. Rimmel London Moisture Renew Lipgloss has a slew of colors to give your lips a super-shiny, glistening hue. Plus it’s packed with moisturizers to soften dry lips, creating the most scrumptiously dewy appearance. I’m talking kissable, non-sticky lips. The slender gloss is easy to carry around for reapplication throughout the day or evening. $7.00 at www.rimmellondon.com.
After the portrait is complete, I am confident and ready to face the world.
